311 plots 'Uplifter' tour of the US :
Alt-rockers 311 have mapped a late winter run of the West Coast as the band continues supporting last summer's "Uplifter."

311 Concert ScheduleThe latest round of shows will kick off with a Feb. 23 performance in Santa Cruz, followed by two more California stops. The 11-city outing, which will include The Wailers as opening support for five of the concerts (2/25-3/2), wraps up with a special "311 Day" show (3/11) at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay. The full itinerary is shown below.

"Uplifter," the 311's ninth album, surfaced in June. The set was produced by hard-rock veteran Bob Rock (Metallica, Motley Crue), which resulted in a louder direction for the band's latest effort, according to guitarist/vocalist Nick Hexum.

"It evolved that way [toward a more aggressive sound], but it wasn't pushed," Hexum explained in an interview with LiveDaily earlier this year. "Early on, there was a batch of songs where we thought, 'This is going to be our most heavy album to date.' He loved our reggae stuff, but we found a way to merge the heavy side with the funky reggae side, which I think 'Hey You' does pretty well.

"I realized after we were done that not a lot of bands can get away with putting this many styles on an album."

"Uplifter" marks the band's first collection of new material since 2005's "Don’t Tread on Me."

Album Review: 311, "Uplifter" (Jive) :
311 Tour UplifterBob Rock's (Metallica, Motley Crue) direction feels evident from the crunchy opening riffs of "Hey You," but like a lot of 311 [ tickets ]'s songs, they don't stay in the same place for very long. The verse arrives and the guitars deliver a cleaner, offbeat reggae feel--a dynamic shift that makes the loud louder.

The Omaha, NE, quintet--guitarist/vocalist Nick Hexum, guitarist Tim Mahoney, DJ/Vocalist S.A. Martinez, bassist P-Nut, and drummer Chad Sexton--always knew how to use volume for effect. In fact, their penchant for mixing metal, reggae, hip-hop, dancehall, funk and whatever will fit in their kitchen-sink approach is still very much intact on this, their first studio album since 2005's "Don't Tread On Me."

The reggae is emphasized on "Mix It Up," while guitarist Mahoney strums oriental modalities on "Golden Sunlight," and busts out the sitar sounds for "India Ink." Chad Sexton's sprite drumming drives the poppy step of "It's Alright," which also sports slappy bass funk from P-Nut--a stark contrast from the menacing line he delivers on the heavier "Something Out Of Nothing."

The poppy and melodic "Too Much Too Fast" has Hexum and Martinez collaborating on nice vocal harmonies, and the dreamy "Two Drops In The Ocean" begs for a cold drink and sand between the toes.

In general, it's a case of something new, something old, and, in a few cases, something very familiar. The syncopated guitar on "Jackpot" harkens back to the older funk-driven metal of "Homebrew" and "Unity," and the pseudo-marimba tones of the romantic closer "My Heart Sings" smacks of 2001's single "Amber."

It's the kind of stylistic hopscotch that almost doesn't make sense when you think about it in theory, but works perfectly when you hear it.

Music: 311 Day :
For a band that formed in the sticks of Omaha, Neb., to have their own holiday seems rare. 311 is a band consisting of Nick Hexum as lead vocals, S.A Martinez as vocals/disc jockey, Tim Mahoney on lead guitar, P-nut on bass, and Chad Sexton on the drums. The five have released twelve CDs, three DVDs, and have hit top charts over seventeen times. In 2000, the band played a show in the city of New Orleans that changed everything for them. They went from small town band to big rock stars.

311 Concert TicketsWho’d have thought that a concert could become a holiday? How about a three-day-long celebration? 311, must have done something right over the years, because every other year they hold a three-day-long celebration of their holiday known as 311 day. In 2000, the mayor of New Orleans declared 311 day as an official holiday of the city. Though it is not recognized as a national holiday, it is celebrated by 311 fans all over the globe.

The holiday falls on March 11 and consists of parties on the 10, 11 and 12. Both a day and night concert are performed on the 11, each one lasting a few hours. The event draws over thousands of 311 fans together in the city of New Orleans. This year, however, the event is scheduled to happen in Las Vegas, Nevada. The location has been changed due to a medical convention being held in the same area, causing a lack of accommodation for 311 fans.

311 Biography :
311's fusion of reggae and rap-metal was created in Omaha, NE, where singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, DJ/singer S.A. Martinez, guitarist Tim Mahoney, drummer Chad Sexton, and the bassist known only as P-Nut launched the group in 1990. Taking their name from the Omaha Police Department's code for indecent exposure, the quintet began gigging locally and soon moved to Los Angeles, signing with Capricorn Records in 1991. 311 then translated their regional success into national recognition with several key albums, including 1992's Music, 1993's Grassroots, and 1995's eponymous 311 (aka The Blue Album), the latter of which reached number 12 on the album chart, sold three million copies in the U.S., and sported the hit tracks "All Mixed Up" and "Down."

311 Tour Dates and ScheduleIn 1996, following a nonstop year of touring in support of 311, the band released Enlarged to Show Detail, a home video of live performances taken from amphitheater shows in Kansas City and Denver. Transistor, a double album of new songs sandwiched onto one CD, arrived one year later and prompted the group's most ambitious tour yet. The album soon achieved platinum status, and the resulting show dates provided ample material for Live, which was released in 1998 and captured the band's strength in concert. A year later, 311 returned with Soundsystem before jumping to the Volcano label for the release of From Chaos, which appeared in summer 2001. Evolver appeared two years later; unlike its predecessors, however, the album failed to go gold or platinum.

By now, 311 had been together over ten years, and the band celebrated its decade-plus existence with the Greatest Hits compilation. Released in July 2004, the album included all of 311's hit singles, several new tracks, and the band's reggae-tinged cover of the Cure's "Love Song," which had originally appeared on the soundtrack to the Adam Sandler film 50 First Dates. 311 presented new material in August 2005 with the Don't Tread on Me LP, followed by an additional round of touring. Upon its completion, the road-weary musicians took a hiatus, their first break in nearly ten years. 311 soon returned to the studio, however, this time partnering with mega-producer Bob Rock. Heralded by frontman Nick Hexum as "the heaviest 311 has ever been," the resulting Uplifter arrived in 2009. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
